Judging Philosophy
My extensive background in creating and evaluating quilts enables me to offer valuable insights into design, technique, and craftsmanship. With a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of quilting standards, I guide participants in elevating their work while fostering creativity, confidence, and continued growth in the quilting process.
My approach to quilt judging is rooted in encouragement, education, and respect for the maker. I provide positive and constructive feedback that addresses both design and workmanship. Design includes the quilt top and the quilting design, and how the quilting enhances and complements the overall composition. Workmanship reflects the quality of construction and the execution of the quilting.
Positive comments are intended to recognize strengths and celebrate excellence, while constructive comments offer guidance for improving future work. I believe judging is not about criticism—it is about encouragement and growth. I welcome volunteers in the judging room so they can see firsthand that the process is supportive, thoughtful, and educational.
I view my judging as an extension of my teaching. My goal is to acknowledge excellence in quilting while guiding quilters of all skill levels toward stronger skills and greater confidence through clear, respectful, and constructive feedback.
Experience & Education
I have judged quilts at numerous fairs, quilt guild shows, I completed the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges certification in 2025 and continue my education through ongoing classes and lectures to stay current with new techniques and trends in quilting.
I also believe strongly in the importance of judging from the maker’s perspective. I regularly enter my own quilts in competitions across the country and value having my work evaluated. This experience informs my judging and deepens my appreciation for the courage and effort involved in entering a judged show.
Judged Shows & Consultation
If your organization is considering a judged show, I would be happy to assist. Many groups transitioning from non-judged to judged exhibitions report noticeable improvements in quilt quality as a result of constructive feedback provided to entrants. I am available to help with category definitions, judging forms, judging room setup, and to answer any questions throughout the process.
